Why a wooden surfboard?Wooden surfboards have a classic and timeless beauty. The natural grain patterns and textures of wood create a unique and visually stunning boards. They are also more environmentally friendly than conventional foam and fiberglass boards. They are made from sustainably sourced or reclaimed wood, reducing the environmental impact. Our building process involves precise engineering and efficient cutting techniques to maximize the use of the wood, leaving no waste behind.
-
What type of wood? Our standard surfboards are made with Paulownia tree wood because of its resistance and lightness. We are proud to say that our wood is planted and harvested in Portugal. We offer the option to blend Paulownia with other high-quality woods, such as cedar, cork, cryptomeria, and agave. Please note that the addition of other woods may lead to prices variations.
-
Are they heavy? The weight of hollow wooden surfboards can fluctuate based on factors such as dimensions, construction techniques, and the specific wood variety employed. Over recent years, we have dedicated our efforts to a series of refinements at reducing the weight of our wooden boards. When comparing our boards to traditional foam, our findings typically reveal that our boards are either comparable in weight or merely around 10% heavier at most. In our current production, standard boards feature 4mm wooden planks for both the bottom and deck, combined with a lightweight 4oz fiberglass layer laminated with bio-based epoxy resin. This meticulous approach yields surfboards that are not only lightweight and durable but also align with sustainability objectives.
-
How well do they perform? Our surfboards are not decorative. They are built to offer similar performance and experience as standard foam boards. The wood's natural flex pattern can provide a responsive and lively feel, making them enjoyable to ride in various wave conditions.
-
What is the durability of hollow wooden surfboards? When properly constructed and maintained, hollow wooden surfboards can be highly durable. They are more resistant to dings and dents than foam boards.
-
How are they glassed? We use 4oz fiberglass combined with bio-based epoxy resin, which not only causes less environmental impact but also features a transparent finish that showcases the natural beauty of the wood.
-
Why do they need a vent? Our surfboards are designed with a hollow interior and they can expand as the temperature rises. So, if the boards were completely sealed, they could experience excessive stress on their deck and bottom. The vent plug enables pressure equalization. This means that as temperature and pressure change, the vent plug helps maintain a balanced environment inside the board, preventing potential damage.

Let's talk about this...It is estimated that over 1 million surfboards are sold annually, yet little attention is given to the potential environmental damage caused by these numbers. Most brands and shapers avoid discussing this topic altogether. The reality is that surfboards made from petroleum-based materials are non-degradable and can persist in landfills for hundreds of years, posing significant harm to the environment and those involved in their production due to their high toxicity. Moreover, the production process generates a considerable amount of material waste. At Malua, we firmly believe in the power of small actions to create a significant impact on our future. We are passionate about finding solutions to reduce the environmental footprint of conventional surfboards and protect the oceans and ecosystems we cherish as surfers. That's why we advocate for the use of wooden surfboards as a more sustainable alternative. By choosing wooden surfboards and supporting environmentally friendly alternatives, we can continue to pursue our passion for surfing while also preserving the beauty of our natural world. Each conscious choice we make contributes to the collective effort of safeguarding our planet, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the wonders of the ocean just as we do today. At our Atelier we adopt some practices to commit to the environment, like the zero waste material, where we do recycle 100% of our waste, we buy wood always from certified producers, use as much reclaimed wood as we can or have, we plant a tree for each board we sell and also donate 2% of our earnings to support organizations that protect our oceans.
